Ladakh removes Inner Line Permit (ILP) need to boost tourism

In a significant decision for encouraging domestic tourists, the Union Territory of Ladakh has done away with the need for an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for all Indian nationals to visit the protected areas of Ladakh, including Pangong and Tsomoriri lake.

Earlier domestic visitors were required to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) from authorities to visit the inner areas of Ladakh and were only allowed to visit areas beyond Panamik till Warshi including Yarma Gompa/Yarma Gonbo Monastery in Leh’s Nubra Valley.

With this development not only all Indians can visit notified protected areas but also Ladakh Home Department, in its official notification, directed the Superintendents and Deputy Superintendents stating that ‘residents of the protected area’ can visit other protected areas ‘without any permit’

The Inner Line Permit was a requisite for Indian tourists if they wanted to visit the protected places in the Union Territory. However, for foreign nationals, it was required to have the Protected Area Permits (PAP).

Apart from that Lieutenant Governor R K Mathur also launched Ladakh Police’s Tourist Wing on Friday.

The new wing will be trained suitably to be able to create a flawless communication system with various tourism agencies, civil administration, health department and other stakeholders for effective coordination in the face of an emergency, ANI quoted the L-G as saying.

Meanwhile, a parliamentary panel led by the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury will go on a five days visit to Kashmir and Ladakh.
