Mukesh Ambani is world’s eighth richest: Elon Musk is on top





Mukesh Ambani is the world’s eighth richest man. In the Hurun Global Rich List 2021. Ambani’s total wealth has surged by 24% over the past year to $83 billion or close to Rs 6.09 lakh crore.

Besides the Reliance Industries chairman and managing director, the other Indian billionaires finding a place in the list include Gautam Adani & family (rank 48 with Rs 2.34 lakh crore wealth), Shiv Nadar & family (rank 58 with Rs 1.94 lakh crore wealth), Lakshmi N Mittal (rank 104 with Rs 1.40 lakh crore wealth), Cyrus Poonawalla of Serum Institute (rank 113 with Rs 1.35 lakh crore).

India now has 209 billionaires, of which 177 live in India, compared with 689 in the US. India last year added billionaires at a similar rate to the US — 50 compared with 69. However, among Indians, Jay Chaudhry or Zscaler, an IT services firm, saw maximum growth in his wealth followed by Vinod Shantilal Adani of Adani Group. Jay Chaudhry’s wealth surged by 271% to Rs 96,000 crore while Adani’s fortunes rose by 128% to Rs 72,000 crore.

Elon Musk of Tesla has got the top spot in the list as his wealth surged by 328% to $197 billion. He added $151 billion to his wealth in a single year. 

In the Hurun list, three individuals added more than US$50bn in a single year, led by Elon Musk with $151bn, on the back of the rise of e-cars, whilst e-commerce billionaires Jeff Bezos of Amazon and Colin Huang of Pinduoduo added $50bn each. “At this rate, expect to see fifty or more break through the US$100bn mark within the next five years,” the Hurun report said.

In the list, 161 individuals added $5 billion or more to their wealth over the past year, led by 84 from China, 38 from USA and 5 from India.
