1,200 gelatin sticks recovered by crime branch in Mumbai on Tuesday

Thane crime branch on Tuesday seized over 63 boxes containing 12,000 gelatine sticks and 3000 electronic detonators- the illegal explosives, from the warehouse in Karivali village near Bhiwandi in Thane, Mumbai.

Gurunath Kashinath Mhatre, the owner of the warehouse, has been arrested by the police.

The police officer informed that they conducted the raid after Ananda Bhilare, a constable, received the information about the large stock of explosives being stored at Mittal enterprise located at the Karivali village.

“Despite knowing that it (Gelatin sticks) is injurious to human lives, Gurunath Kashinath Mhatre possessed gelatin sticks and electric detonators in huge quantities,” the Thane Police statement read. “An FIR has been registered against the accused for having illegal possession of the substances without any license and the accused has been taken under police custody,” it added.

Apart from that, another local Crime Branch unit seized 1300 gelatin sticks and 835 detonators from a farm warehouse located at Ghota in Tiwasa taluka of Amravati district on Monday.

Earlier this month, Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) arrested two men with over 7kg of uranium, a highly explosive and radioactive material worth over Rs 21 crore.

A 27-year-old Thane resident, Jigar Pandya, was arrested in the incident after he was trying to sell it illegally and was in search of a possible customer. NIA has taken over the probe in the case.

It’s worth recalling that an gelation-laden SUV was discovered outside the residence of Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai recently which led to arrests of now-dismissed assistant police inspector Sachin Vaze.
