2nd phase polls in Assam: Himanta Biswa Sarma expects a bounty

The second phase of Assam assembly election, to be conducted on Thursday, will see 39 constituencies going to the polls.

These are located in Barak Valley, three hill districts of East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, central Assam’s Hojai, Nagaon and Morigaon districts, and some parts of lower Assam.

These regions have a diverse population consisting of indigenous people, tribal communities, Hindu Bengalis and Muslims.

In the 2016 assembly election in Assam, the BJP had won 22 out of 39 seats in the regions where the second phase of voting is going to be held.

Asom Gana Parishad, BJP’s ally party won two of those seats, Congress bagged six, the All India United Democratic Front won five and the BJP’s former ally Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won four of those seats.

In this election, the BPF has joined Congress and AIUDF alliance in Assam.

The second phase of polling is crucial for competing political parties.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday, “There is no challenge for us in the second phase. The second phase is our phase because it will be held in Barak Valley, the hill districts and central Assam. We will win maximum seats in the second phase.”
