Every year on January 10, World Hindi Day or the Vishwa Hindi Diwas is celebrated with an aim to promote the use of the Hindi language worldwide. The day also marks the anniversary of the World Hindi Conference, which was held for the first time in the year 1975.
In 1975, the World Hindi Conference took place in Maharashtra’s Nagpur on January 10. The conference was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and saw participation from a total of 30 countries and Since then, the World Hindi Conference has been organised in different countries like Mauritius, United Kingdom, Trinidad and Tobago, and United States.
And in 2006, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh declared that January 10 will be observed as World Hindi Day every year. This was also the first time that the ministry of external affairs started celebrating the day abroad.
People often confuse Vishwa Hindi Diwas with the National Hindi Diwas. However, these two are not the same. While Vishwa Hindi Diwas is celebrated to create a global passion for Hindi, National Hindi Diwas is celebrated after the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi as the official language in 1949.
