Aditi Singh leaves Congress for BJP, finally

Two months after hopping to BJP from the Congress, Raebareli MLA Aditi Singh finally sent her resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi today.

Aditi Singh announced her resignation as party member and MLA in two separate letters addressed to Congress and the Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly, copies of which she shared on her Twitter handle.

The timing of Singh’s resignation letter is significant. The Uttar Pradesh assembly polls are only three weeks away. Moreover, she held the Raebareli assembly seat, which is viewed as a Congress bastion that the BJP has not been able to breach until now.

A rebel MLA, Aditi Singh had been a vocal critic of the Congress party and its leadership even before joining the BJP in November last year.

Singh (34) was first elected to the UP Legislative Assembly in 2017. She is the daughter of five-time MLA late Akhilesh Singh.

While Aditi Singh was elected to the Assembly as a Congress MLA, she has on a number of occasions voiced support of the BJP government in the state while criticising her own party colleagues.

The Congress suspended Aditi Singh from the party’s women’s wing in May 2020 year after the first-time MLA slammed her party for arranging 1,000 buses for migrants stranded in parts of Uttar Pradesh owing to the Covid-19 lockdown.

Aditi Singh has also, in contrast to her party, supported the BJP-led central government on a number of issues, including the abrogation of Article 370.

Along with former BSP MLA Bandana Singh, Aditi Singh was inducted into the BJP in the presence of state unit president Swatantra Dev Singh on November 24, 2021.
