In a tragic incident, a major fire broke out in a Mumbra hospital in the wee hours of Wednesday, killing four patients. The incident took place on the first floor of the Prime Criticare Hospital in the Kausa area in Mumbra locality near Thane district.
As many as three fire engines and five ambulances had been rushed to the spot to rescue patients. At least 20 patients were rescued – of which six were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Speaking about the incident, Mumbai Police Inspector Madhukar Shivaji Kad said, “Four people have died in the fire but the cause of death will be ascertained through postmortem. Initially, we had received information that there are 12 people inside the hospital but the numbers may vary. A police investigation will be done and action will be taken.”
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was informed of the tragedy, he said. The family of each deceased will be given a compensation of Rs. Five lakh and those injured will get Rs one lakh each, he added.
A high-level inquiry committee has been constituted to go into the cause of the fire, he said. The committee will comprise officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation and also the police and medical officials, he said.
The incident came days after 15 COVID-19 patients died after a massive fire broke out at the intensive care unit of Vijay Vallabh Hospital at Virar in the adjoining Palghar district on April 23.
