Amit Shah is said to have a date with Rajnikanth on Saturday; speculation is rife

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to meet film star Rajnikanth on November 21 when he visits Chennai. Rajnikant has a huge fan following, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where a sort of cult worship culture prevails. He had entered politics in 2017 and was expected to launch a political party of his own. Due to a host of factors, all did not go according to plans made earlier.

During Shah’s upcoming visit to Chennai, it was said that late Karunanidhi’s elder son MK Alagiri would also meet him. Alagiri has, however, denied any such plans and also denied that he has plans to start a new party. He said he would discuss the issue with his supporters and well-wishers first.

It is likely that new political alignments may emerge in Tamil Nadu as the field is now wide open after the deaths of J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi over the past few years. AIADMK led by Jayalalithaa and DMK led by Karunanidhi had defined the TN politics for the past few decades.

In 2019, Rajnikanth had launched his website “rajininmandram.org” and a party logo also. This had led to some speculation that he may contest the Lok Sabha elections. Another film star, Kamal Hassan, had entered politics in Tamil Nadu recently and launched his party Makkali Nidhi Maiyyam.

Rajnikanth’s health had caused some worries and speculation at one time. He had then declared that he indeed faced some health issues. He had also said that he will first discuss his moves with his own people and then make an announcement.

The BJP had good relations with the ruling AIADMK but of late, the relationship has come under some strain. This is mainly due to differences over issues pertaining to “Vetrivel Yatra”. AIADMK had earlier warned the BJP to not to disrupt “peace and harmony in the state” by undertaking this yatra.

Elections for legislative assembly are due to be held in Tamil Nadu in April-May next year. AIADMK had won the last two elections, in 2011 as also in 2016, trouncing the rival DMK. However, DMK led by Stalin hopes to do better and return to power in the absence of Jayalalithaa.
