Another ‘contempt’ proceedings okayed a cartoonist for denigrating SC

Cartoonist Rachita Taneja, who operates under the twitter handle @sanitary panels, would now face contempt proceedings for her illustrations against the Supreme Court.

While granting his consent, attorney general KK Venugopal said the cartoonist’s illustration was “gross insinuation” against the top court of the country and “audacious assault and insult to the institution.”

In her tweets, Rachita Taneja, who tweets from the handle “Sanitary Panels” made a cartoon on the Supreme Court granting bail to Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami.

Goswami had been arrested over the charge of abetment of suicide of an architect Anvay Naik. He was granted interim bail a week later as the bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Indra Banerjee said: “If we as a constitutional court do not lay down law and protect liberty, then who will?”

The nod for contempt came after an appeal from a law student.

Recently, the Attorney General had also given consent to contempt proceedings against stand-up artist Kunal Kamra for his vicious criticism of the Supreme Court.
