Centre asks Social Media giants if they have complied with new laws

The Social Media giants have been asked for their response by the Modi government if they have complied with the new digital rules.

Platforms like WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook were given three months to comply with the new rules that requires them to appoint a compliance officer in India, set up a grievance response mechanism and take down content within 36 hours of a legal order.

Now the Centre has asked them to convey their response: “ASAP, preferably today.

The new rules require for these platforms to set up a mechanism to respond to complaints. It also need to trace the “first originator” of information found to “undermine the sovereignty of India, security of the state, or public order.”

The big platforms that host third party information, messages and posts, stand to lose protection from lawsuits and prosecution of they fail to comply with the rules.

In essence, it means that big tech giants could no longer be just intermediaries that provides them with legal immunity from objectionable content on their platform.

They would be treated as any other publishing platform and could face action.

WhatsApp has knocked at the door of the Court, claiming it would force them to trace the origin of messages and break privacy protections to users.
