Dhoni should bat at No. 3, says the most successful man at that spot

Now that Suresh Raina is out of IPL 2020, and so is Harbhajan Singh and there is persistent doubt on young fast bowler Deepak Chahar, advices are coming right and left on how Chennai Super Kings should approach its campaign.

The advice from Raina himself is pertinent and it goes to no less than captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni whom he wants to bat at number three.

Raina had occupied the number three slot for CSK for years and had unearned unprecedented success at the position. But he now says Dhoni should take over his slot to give CSK more flexibility.

Dhoni began his career in the top order before taking up the finisher’s role.

“He has the experience to bat at that position. How can one forget Dhoni’s 148 against Pakistan in the second ODI at Visakhapatnam in April 2005,” Raina was quoted in a magazine.

“It’s a crucial position,” he added.

Raina is the leading run-getter in the history of the IPL since its inception in 2008. He scored 5369 in 188 IPL matches, no less than 4,527 coming in 164 games for Chennai Super Kings.

Not just Raina but even his former teammate and rival as captain for Kolkata Knight Riders, Gautam Gambhir, backs Dhoni to bat at number three.

Dhoni batted at number three for Team India in 17 ODIs and notched up 993 runs at a staggering average of 82.75.

Raina has pulled out of IPL 2020 for personal reasons. He is currently in quarantined at his residence in Delhi.
