Facebook, Google etc comply with new IT rules: Not Twitter yet, says report

All big social media companies, including Facebook, Google, Telegram, have finally complied with the new IT rules that came into effect earlier this week. However, even after a stern warning from the central government, Twitter is yet to fall in line, as per a report in RepublicWorld.

“Significant social media intermediaries like Koo, Sharechat, Telegram, LinkedIn, Google, Facebook, and even the WhatsApp etc have shared details with the Ministry as per the requirement of the new IT Rules,” informed the government sources.

The government on Thursday firmly told Twitter to “stop beating around the bush and comply with the laws of the land” instead of “dictating terms” to the world’s largest democracy.

Later that night, Twitter informed the Centre that it has appointed a nodal officer who will double up as the grievance officer. But the government source has revealed that “As per the rules the officers of the significant social media companies must be the employees of the company and residents in India but Twitter has not yet sent the details of the chief compliance officer to the Ministry.”

According to the new IT Rules, published on February 25, a ‘significant social media intermediary’ (SSMI) has to appoint a chief compliance officer, a nodal contact person for 24×7 coordination with law enforcement agencies, and a resident grievance officer.
