From Amarinder to Badal to Bhajji: ‘This just isn’t done’ to West Bengal

The protest in West Bengal against the current Mamata Banerjee’s government by Bhartiya Janata Party took a whole new turn when a video of a cop pulling a Sikh’s turban went viral.

Viral visuals of the police wrestling a Sikh man to the ground have set off a major controversy as the BJP has accused the police of hurting the religious sentiments.

Soon, the controversy gathered momentum on social media and multiple BJP leaders tweeted about it. Even cricketer Harbhajan Singh also presented his disappointment and tagged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in his tweet.

“Please look into the matter. This just isn’t done”. Harbhajan tweeted.

Shiromani Akali Dal also demanded that Mamata Banerjee should take strict action against the cop responsible for the attack on Mr. Balwinder Singh, who has been sent to police custody till Monday.

SAD leader, Manjinder Singh Sirsa has informed that he is going to meet Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar on Sunday and a delegation of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) will be accompanying him.

“Today our delegation is leaving for Kolkata, our Balwinder Singh, who is a retired officer of the para-military forces, whose turban was pulled off and yanked by his hair, we will not tolerate this. We have been repeatedly asking the Mamata Banerjee Government, to give justice to him, but instead of this, he has been taken into 3-day custody. We do not want to take to roads but don’t force us. We will go meet the Governor today, will ask for justice everywhere even in courts, we will ensure strict action against the cops who treated him this way,” said Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

A 43-year-old Sikh man who was mishandled by the West Bengal Police is identified as Balwinder Singh. He is a retired officer of Paramilitary forces.

BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said that even brave soldiers are not spared in the TMC regime. Demanding strict punishment for the cops, he tweeted, “Security personnel Balwinder Singh was beaten by the West Bengal Police on the road and insulted his turban; he is a capable soldier! He has also done several military courses! The humiliation of such brave people is sad in Mamata Raj. Such policemen should be punished!”

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh too expressed shock at the “humiliating treatment” of the Sikh man under the TMC-led government.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Police has released its clarification, stating that Mr. Singh was carrying a firearm in the protest and his headgear “had fallen off automatically in the scuffle that ensued”
