Imran Khan’s government bans Social Media in Pakistan as violence spirals





Imran Khan’s government in Pakistan has imposed a complete ban on social media platforms, including WhatsApp and Twitter amidst mounting protests by supporters of Islamist terror outfit Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). 

Other significant social media platforms, like Telegram, TikTok and YouTube have been suspended too across the country from 11 am to 4 p.m. 

Pakistn’s interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed declared a complete ban on TLP on Wednesday. 

The demonstration in TLP’s support has escalated with its supporters demanding the expulsion of French ambassador and French products from the country. 

The violence surged after the arrest of Islamist party leader Saad Hussain Rizvi with scores of protestors all over streets of major cities, including Lahore and Rawalpindi. Social Media is terming it a civil war in Pakistan. 

Strong anti-French sentiments have been simmering in Pakistan for months ever since French President Emmanuel Macron in October 2020 defended the publication of caricatures of Prophet Muhammad and pledged to fight “Islamist separatism”.
