Jaswant Singh dies of cardiac arrest; Modi mourns his demise
Jaswant Singh, the stalwart of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Union minister, took his last breath on Sunday at 6:55 am.
In its statement, Delhi's Army Hospital (R&R) said he had a cardiac arrest this morning. His COVID-19 status was negative. On June 25, Singh's treatment for Sepsis with Multiorgan Dysfunction Syndrome started in the hospital.
Singh died at the age of 82 and he spent most of his life serving his nation. During the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he handled the responsibility of external affairs, defence, and finance.
While expressing condolences, PM Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter: "Jaswant Singh Ji served our nation diligently, first as a soldier and later during his long association with politics. During Atal Ji’s Government, he handled crucial portfolios and left a strong mark in the worlds of finance, defence, and external affairs. Saddened by his demise."
"Jaswant Singh Ji will be remembered for his unique perspective on matters of politics and society. He also contributed to the strengthening of the BJP. I will always remember our interactions. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti."
Modi added, "Spoke to Shri Manvendra Singh and expressed condolences on the unfortunate demise of Shri Jaswant Singh Ji. True to his nature, Jaswant Ji fought his illness with immense courage for the last six years."
Jaswant Singh was a multifaceted personality. He served in the Indian Army and even after retirement Singh decided to keep serving his nation. He became the BJP's founding member and served as a Parliamentarian from both the houses for a long time. He was also a renowned author and penned books like “Defending India” and “Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence.”
While expressing his remorse over the loss, Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister wrote on Twitter, "Deeply pained by the passing away of veteran BJP leader & former Minister, Shri Jaswant Singh ji. He served the nation in several capacities including the charge of Raksha Mantri. He distinguished himself as an effective Minister and Parliamentarian."
He also said, "Shri Jaswant Singh ji would be remembered for his intellectual capabilities and stellar record in service to the nation. He also played a key role in strengthening the BJP in Rajasthan. Condolences to his family and supporters in this sad hour. Om Shanti."
Arvind Kejriwal, chief minister of Delhi and Ram Madhav of BJP also expressed their condolences.
