Mamata ‘lied’ in claiming she had been attacked in Nandigram

Bengal’s chief minister Mamata Banerjee would’ve a lot to explain after apparently resorting to a terrible lie on her so-called “injury” during her visit to Nandigram on Wednesday.

Banerjee played victim in claiming the day after that she had been attacked in Nandigram where she had gone to file her nomination. She claimed 4-5 people carried out the attack and there was no police officer around her to come to her rescue.

Pointing to her leg, Banerjee claimed to reporters that she had been pushed by 4-5 men while she was getting into her car. “See how it (her leg) has swelled up…Of course its a conspiracy…there were no policemen around me.”

Unfortunately for Mamata Banerjee, an intrepid TV reporter (TV9 Bharatvarsh) dug up the truth on the site.

Abhishek Upadhyay, the reporter, spoke to eyewitnesses to Mamata’s “injury” and more than one corroborated on Live TV that it was a pillar to which the chief minister’s car had collided while she was beaming to people from inside, hands folded.

“The driver apparently didn’t see the pillar and hit it. Mamata was hit on her leg and her security rushed to a nearby shop (Mighty Mishtan Bhandar) to fetch the ice in a bid to reduce the inflammation.”

The shop owner, too, confirmed to the reporter that Mamata’s security indeed had secured ice for her from his shop.

“Is it Taliban that her convoy was attacked? Huge police force accompanies her. Who can get near her?” said state BJP vice-president Arjun Singh.

Congress’ state chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said: “How can one believe that police was not there with her when at a time security was so beefed up in nandigram, CCTV cameras were there. Then how can 4-5 youth attack her? No one will believe this theory.

“It’s a nautanki because she knows that situation is not good for her in Nandigram, she did nautanki to seek sympathy.”

Ms Banerjee, who was expected to spend the night in Nandigram, soon left for Kolkata, around 130 km away.  She has reportedly checked into SKMM hospital in Kolkata.

The onlookers termed the incident to have happened at 5.15 p.m in the evening. Further, more than one corroborated that Mamata was being accompanied by police personnel.

This “police” bit is important in the entire sequence of events since BJP, earlier in the day, had complained to the Election Commission that Mamta had been accompanied by police personnel, who in turn had been intimidating voters to vote for ruling Trinamool Congress. BJP had also named two senior police officers who needed to be suspended for doing TMC’s bidding. BJP also wanted “the full expenditure incurred on the convoy used by Ms Mamata Banerjee from the state exchequer to be added to the expenditure account of the candidate.”

Mamata has squared up against her own aide Suvendu Adhikari, one of the founders of Trinamool Congress no less, in this battle royale at Nandigram.
