Many farm leaders are Left extremists; intelligence report names them

Many of the leaders in the forefront of protesting farmers in Delhi owe allegiance to left wing extremist organisations, according to intelligence reports, as published in Swarajyamag.

Pro-Left wing extremists have plans to instigate violence in the coming days, these reports suggest. Details are given hereunder regarding the affiliations of different leaders:

Satnam Singh Pannu , 65, is president of Kissan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC), and does not share good relationship with leaders of other factions. His group commands considerable support in Tarn Taran district of Punjab.

This outfit was formed in the year 2000 when the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government was not procuring paddy from the mandis. It was due to KMSC’s agitation that the crop was finally lifted.

Joginder Singh Ugrahan, 75, is president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), founded in 2002, and he had left the Army to look after family’s farms. According to intelligence reports, he is making efforts to unite various pro-Left organizations to fight jointly for the cause of the people of Punjab.

BKU (Ugrahan) general secretary Sukhdev Singh has been responsible for rail roko, burning of effigies of BJP leaders and their gherao. Almost two-thirds of the protestors gathered at Delhi borders have been mobilised by this faction. BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) has raised the voice for release of Telegu activist Varavar Rao, arrested in 2018 for his alleged involvement in Bhima Koregaon Elgar Parishad case.

Surjit Singh Phool, 75, Punjab unit chief of BKU-Krantikari, was arrested in 2009 and jailed for having links with Maoists. During the present agitation, Phool had equated Nirankari ground in Burari to “an open jail” when the protesters were requested to move to this area.

Darshan Pal, 70, is the Punjab president of Krantikari Kisan Union, having close contacts with pro-CPI and Maoist groups. He has close ties with other left wing activists like Joginder Singh Ugrahan, Jhandha Singh Jethuke, Sukhdev Singh Kojri Kalan, Satwant Singh Wazidpur, Surjit Singh Phool and some others.

Ajmer Singh Lakhowal heads BKU (Lakhowal) which came into being in 1989 after split in the BKU. He opposed the alleged state repression during terrorism in Punjab and participated in a “paath” in UK for Sukhwant Singh and Beant Singh, both assasins of Indira Gandhi.

In 1999, he was arrested in a case of misappropriation of money of farmers in a tractor deal. He said that his union will not allow flow of water in SYL canal. He was made Punjab Mandi Board chairman in March 2007 in lieu of his support for SAD during the elections.

Buta Singh Burj Gill, 66, is aligned with BKU Lakhowal. He later formed his own union BKU Dakaunda and wields influence in the Sangrur district. He was one among those who gheraoed the Punjab Raj Bhavan for many days in 1984.
