Now Kerala’s school textbooks don’t mention Sushruta, ‘father of surgery’

After the reports of the NCERT textbook not having any information regarding high claims that Mughals gave grants to rebuild temples, another news has emerged from Kerala that the state board is teaching distorted history to class 9th students.

In class 9th social studies books, the state board not only falsified the information but also tried to give the information a secularized view.

According to the book, Abu al-Qasim Al-Zahwari is the ‘father of surgery’; while it is widely regarded that Indian physician Sushruta had done surgeries way back in the 8th century BCE. Al-Zahwari is said to have lived in the 10th century C.E

The controversial content is printed on page no 34 under the title great people and their contributions.

Sushrutha is known as the Father of Indian Medicine and the Father of Plastic surgery for inventing various procedures of surgery. he has given a detailed procedure of surgical techniques in his text “Sushruta Sinha” which contains 184 comprehensive chapters containing descriptions of 1,120 illnesses, 700 medical plants, and 57 preparations based on animal sources.

Adding to that, the majestic text also talks about different dislocations and fractures and gives a classification of eye diseases including cataract surgery. In addition to this, it also speaks about the management of hemorrhoids, fistulae, laparotomy and management of intestinal obstruction, perforated intestines and accidental perforation of the abdomen with protrusion of omentum and the principles of fracture management, viz., traction, manipulation, apposition, and stabilization including some measures of rehabilitation and fitting of prosthetic.

Questions are abounding state the state has ignored the fact despite knowing the fact that he is regarded as the father of surgery.

Interestingly, a few days before the parliamentary standing committee met to discuss the false claims made by NCERT in the history textbook and revision of the facts. The panel had met to mainly discuss the need to remove references to un-historical facts and distortions about our national heroes, to ensure proportionate references to all periods of Indian history, and to highlight the role of great women in Indian history.
