Now Mehbooba thinks the world of Rahul Gandhi: Calls him “history” man
People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti took to Twitter to reach out to potential allies and she seems to have found an answer in Rahul Gandhi, and by extension the Congress.
Her newfound love for the Congress is not something surprising now that she has burnt her bridges with the BJP. "History will remember Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for standing up to the present dictatorial regime," she said on Saturday.
Mehbooba said "new India is in the grip of a select few" and Rahul is the only politician who dares to speak the truth. Incidentally, after July 2008, when her party pulled down the coalition government led by senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, she never had a word of praise for anyone from the party.
"Ridicule Rahul Gandhi all you want but he's the only politician who dares to speak the truth. Its a fact that new India is in the grip of a select few and crony capitalists. History will remember him for standing up to the present dictatorial regime," she said.
In another tweet, Mehbooba said the Centre had "unleashed" its "pet agency", the National Investigation Agency (NIA), ln farmer unions protesting against the three agriculture laws.
"GOI's pet agency NIA is now being unleashed on farmer unions. The rot that has set into India's premier terror investigative agency can be gauged from the manner in which they are fabricating charges on Kashmiris, farmers & those who dare to dissent," she said.
One doesn't know much about how many farmers and dissenters have been booked by the NIA. One Kashmiri close to her, Wahid Para, president of youth wing of PDP, was indeed booked by the NIA in a case for his involvement with Hizbul Mujahideen (HM). He was also arrested before the District Development Council (DDC) elections in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir.
Several other Kashmiris were booked during her tenure as CM of J&K when she was heading a PDP-BJP coalition. In June 2017, the NIA had arrested several Kashmiris for their alleged involvement in secessionist activities, creating disturbances by financing stone-pelting and such other activities.
Prominent among those arrested during her CM-ship, when she held the charge of Home Minister of J&K also included SAS Geelani's son in law Altaf Fantoosh. Others arrested in included Peer Saifullah, Mehrajuddin Kalwal, Nayeem Khan, Shahid ul Islam, Mohammad Akbar Khanday and Farooq Ahmed.
If the number of arrests by NIA during her own tenure from April 2016 to June 2018 and later period is compared, we find that most of the cases against secessionist Kashmiris were started under her watch.
In April 2016, Zahoor Watali had travelled abroad on a cancelled passport. He was booked later when he attempted to do so again and there were raids at a dozen of his properties. Many Kashmiris jailed during her CM-ship remain behind the bars till date and are facing court cases.
