Sanjay Raut justifies attack on naval officer by Shivsainiks
A retired Indian Navy officer got attacked by six goons, purportedly of Shiv Sena, for sharing a cartoon on Uddhav Thackeray, Chief Minister of Maharashtra. But Shiv Sena has tried to justify the attack as an “angry” and “spontaneous” reaction over the “derogatory” cartoon.
“There is rule of law in Maharashtra. No one who takes the law into their hands will be spared. This is the policy of Uddhav Thackeray,” said, Sanjay Raut, Chief Spokesperson of Shiv Sena while issuing a statement.
About the attack on retires Navy officer, Sanjay Raut said, "Madan Sharma had circulated a cartoon of CM which was derogatory in nature which angered the Shiv Sainiks.”
Raut called BJP's reaction as "unfortunate" and said the saffron party is “politicising the issue”.
At the end of his statement, Raut said, people’s restraint is put under strain when Freedom of Expression is used as guise for unwarranted, extreme criticism of Constitutional posts like that of the Prime Minister, President, Governor or a Chief Minister.
He also added all of us need to act responsibly and be respectful of each other's feelings. It is the duty of the opposition as well as those in power to ensure that peace is maintained in society.
Sanjay Raut gave his statement after Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra had termed the attack on the retired Navy officer as an act of “state-sponsored terrorism.”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met the veteran on Saturday to enquire about his health.
The retired Navy officer had demanded Uddhav Thackeray to apologise to the country and him after a day of the attack. He also said that the Maharashtra CM should quit his job for not being able to maintain law and order in the state.
BJP protested the bail of accused six Shivsainiks which was granted within minutes.
