Tikait, Yadav, Darshan Pal among several farmer leaders booked

The Delhi Police on Wednesday filed an FIR against several prominent farmer leaders following the violence in the national capital on Republic Day – from vandalising public property to hoisting the protesters’ flag at Red Fort.

As many as 37 farmer leaders, including BKU spokesperson Rakesh Tikait, Medha Patkar, Buta Singh, Yogendra Yadav, were held responsible for yesterday’s riots in one of the FIRs filed by the Delhi Police. The FIR states violent acts such as not following mutually agreed route for the tractor rally and the timing of farmers’ march to disrupt the Republic Day parade.

The Delhi Police has also mentioned farmer leaders such as Darshan Pal, Rajinder Singh, Balbir Singh Rajewal, Buta Singh Burjgil and Joginder Singh Ugraha in its other FIRs for breach of NOC issued for the tractor rally.

Several farmer organisations have dissociated themselves from the violence, with the Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan and the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Bhanu) withdrawing from the agitation at Delhi borders.

The Delhi Police is now scanning mobile phone recordings and CCTV footage from areas where the clashes broke out to identify the suspects. Meanwhile, several visuals emerged that showed protesters running amok on the streets of Delhi beating up police personnel and destroying buses.
