UN faces a crisis of confidence; not in sync with today’s reality: Modi

While addressing the ‘high-level meeting’ to commemorate the historic 75 years of the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the original aim with which the United Nations was built still remains incomplete and the body needs ‘reformed multilateralism’ to address today’s challenges.

‘The declaration acknowledges the need for reform in the United Nation itself. You cannot fight today’s challenges with outdated structures… Without comprehensive reforms, the UN faces a crisis of confidence. For today’s interconnected world, we need a reformed multilateralism that reflects today’s realities” the Prime Minister said.

Under 4 minutes long pre-recorded video, PM Modi said that the UN needs to address the ‘crisis of confidence’ that the body is facing currently.

PM Modi also praised the efforts of the UN in maintaining peace since its inception. He also highlighted that India is one of the largest contributors to the UN Peacekeeping Missions.

India alone has assigned over 2,00,000 troops in 50 out of 71 peacekeeping missions in the last 60 years. Modi while supporting the reforms undertaken by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said,

“Our world today is a better place because of the United Nations. We pay tribute to all those who’ve advanced the cause of peace & development under UN flag, including in UN peacekeeping missions, where India had been a leading contributor”

The PM also added that the world body reflected India’s own philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’

However, he also noted that the world of today is very different from what is when the United Nation was created.

The PM’s speech was prefaced by a welcome note from TS Tirumurti, India’s permanent representative to the United Nations. PM Modi is going to deliver another statement at the UN General Assembly on September 26 through a pre-recorded video.

India has been one of the biggest advocates for the need for reforms at the United Nations and the pitch has been significantly heightened in the last few years. A reformed United Nations Security Council is also among these demands, particularly to do with a permanent seat for India. The United States, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom have always backed for India’s permanent seat whereas China has always stood in between through its veto power.

However, as China has been called out on several global platforms, the scenario is likely to change.
