BJP firms up seat-sharing deal with Nishad Party and Apna Dal

The Bharatiya Janata Party has finalised a seat-sharing deal with Sanjay Nishad’s party and Anupriya Patel’s Apna Dal.

According to sources, Nishad Party will contest on 13 to 17 seats while Apna Dal will contest on 10 to 14 seats.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and leaders of Apna Dal – Union Minister of State (Commerce and Industry) Anupriya Patel and her husband Ashish Patel, as well as Dr Sanjay Nishad of the Nishad Party finalised the numbers in a meeting.

The Nishad Party and Apna Dal, both exercise considerable influence among the non-Yadav OBC voter space, mainly in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The Apna Dal (S) has influence among Kurmi votes and in 2017, Apna Dal demanded 17 seats but it got only 11 seats, out of which it secured a victory of nine seats.

While Nishad Party will contest from Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Azamgarh, Rampur, Sultanpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur and Jaunpur Apna Dal is expected to contest from Ayodhya, Pratapgarh, Allahabad and Mirzapur.

The Nishad Party also which has its influence confined to Purvanchal, is now gradually widening up its base in western UP districts. The party contested 72 seats on its own in the 2017 UP assembly elections, but won only one. But it did catch the public eye for the time after it managed to secure a victory on the extremely crucial Gorakhpur seat.
