Bombay HC denies bail to Arnab Goswami for the day; to take a call tomorrow

Bombay High Court didn’t grant any interim relief to Republic TV network’s editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami any relief for the day. The division bench of Justice SS Shinde and Justice MS Karnik said it would hear both the sides and pass an appropriate order tomorrow.

The bench would also hear the plea of Adnya Anvay Naik, daughter of the late interior designer Anvay Naik, seeking reinvestigation of the A-summary report filed in connection with the FIR of her father’s suicide case.

Goswami wants all the charges related to the case quashed as he believes it’s an “illegal arrest” by Maharashtra police which they effected on Wednesday morning.

Earlier, Republic Media Network claimed to have accessed the copy of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) remand order which is for 14 days in jail for its editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami.

Though the cops were demanding the police custody, the Alibagh CJM has rejected it and approved of judicial custody instead.

In police custody, the accused stays in the lock-up of a police station. In judicial custody, the accused is lodged in jail and is under the custody of the magistrate.

Arnab Goswami was picked up from his residence by the Raigad police on Wednesday morning in connection with two deaths which the latter’s family has alleged happened because Goswami’s TV network didn’t pay up the amount due to them.

The case was deemed to have no merit by the police last year but has been reopened this May by the state government of Maharashtra.

As per Republic TV network, the CJM has found no connection in the chain of suicide in the case in which Goswami has been arrested.

Further, it’s claimed that the judge has noted that there is no “Justifiable ground” for the police custody sought.

In another one-page order, the CJM noted the harassment, the torture and the ill-treatment meted out to Goswami while he was at the police station, as per the Republic network.

“He has a complaint of ill-treatment at the hands of police. I have physically verified the person of the accused. I found abrasion on the right hand of the accused. The previous bandage of his right-hand thumb is found to be pulled. Considering the above-said abrasion marks, its important upon the court to send him for medical examination to Civil Surgeon.”

Arnab was interrogated for five hours at the police station.

The Bombay High Court is set to hear Goswami’s plea against the illegal and unlawful arrest on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has summoned Superintendent of Police Raigad to appear before the panel on Friday by 11 a.m
