Chacko resigns from Congress: ‘You can’t run a party with one central character’

Senior Congress leader PC Chacko on Wednesday resigned from the party ahead of the Kerala Assembly elections.

Chacko alleged that the seats were divided based on factions and blamed the central leadership for failing to lead the party effectively.

Chacko has sent his resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former party president Rahul Gandhi.

“I have been deliberating about this in my mind for many days. There is no Congress in Kerala. There is one Congress (I) and one Congress (A). It is a coordination committee of two parties. Groupism is the biggest bane of Congress party in Kerala,” he said

In his resignation letter, Chacko has further said, “I worked hard for the party, but it is really difficult to work with the Kerala Congress team. I stood with every decision taken by Congress, but it’s now very difficult. You can’t run a party with one central character.”

Allegedly, Congress high command functions as per the diktats of Oommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala.

After resigning from the party, PC Chacko blamed the Kerala Congress leadership and said it functions between two distinct groups and the party’s high command is a mute spectator.

Alleging groupism among senior party leaders, Chacko said, “Kerala is facing a crucial election. People want Congress to come back but there’s groupism practiced by top leaders of Congress. I’ve been arguing with high command that this should be ended. But the high command is also agreeing to the proposal given by both groups.”

Interestingly, Chacko also mentioned the letter written by a group of leaders to Congress president Sonia Gandhi last year. He said the leaders had contacted him but he was against a signature campaign. He, however, added that he agreed with the points raised by the G 23 leaders in their letter. He said it was unfortunate that Congress was not able to find a leader in the last one and a half years since the Lok Sabha election defeat. Chacko’s exit is a big and embarrassing one for the party in a state where its top leader and campaigner Rahul Gandhi is an MP.
