CMIE, dubious data and its old links with Congress party

Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) chief executive Mahesh Vyas on Tuesday came up with some numbers regarding the economic and employment situation in the country amid the Covid pandemic. Vyas claimed that the second wave of the deadly Coronavirus has leftover 1 crore Indian jobless while around 97 per cent of households’ incomes have declined since the beginning of the pandemic last year.

However, the credibility of the numbers is in question.

There are several reports shows that both Ajay Shah and Mahesh Vyas,  who has given these numbers, are closely related to ex-finance minister P Chidambaram. Vyas was also part of the Congress manifesto committee in 2019 which was headed by Chidambaram.

It’s claimed that CMIE was helping Congress by releasing dubious data. That its data are unreliable and projections are often motivated on party lines.

The fact that is often ignored is the CMIE is owned by Ajay Shah (and his family), the same person who also happens to be one of the main accused in a mega scam commonly known as the ‘NSE Co-location’ scam.

Apart from it, In 2019 also, when the sources claimed that the Indian government has approximately created 15 million jobs, it was only CMIE that presented that India recorded the highest unemployment in that period.

It also claimed that people are losing jobs quarter by quarter but failed to clarify how can an economy grow at 7% per annum if the country is facing unemployment at such an increased rate.
