Conspiracy to alter Assam’s demography by 2050: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that a conspiracy has been hatched to alter the state’s demography by 2050.

Talking to reporters in Dhemaji, Sarma said “illegal settlers” claimed to be affected by disasters and moved from one area to another with a specific agenda.

“I’m not naming any particular community. We shouldn’t say it’s being done by followers of Islam as indigenous Assamese Muslims are not part of this. The collective aim of these people (encroachers) is to completely alter the power equation in Assam by 2050,” Sarma said.

“They would do it in phases and Lumding in Hojai district and Barchalla in Sonitpur district are also on their list. They have already taken over Batadroba (Nagaon district) constituency,” he added.

The Assam government has alleged that the people settled are encroachers, and the state government has initiated an agriculture project there.

Sarma said that out of 10,000 people, at least 6000 do not have names in NRC. “Most of the people settled there are from Dalgaon, Baghbor and Sarthebari. There was Constant move to encroach land in Borsola and people from Dhing have moved in.”

The state’s BJP-led government has started evicting settlers who have allegedly encroached government land. Most of those targeted in the drives held at Sonitpur, Hojai, and Darrang were Bengali-speaking Muslims.
