Delhi govt has under-reported 4,500 Covid-19 deaths, claims The Hindu

A report in The Hindu claims that as many as 4500 Covid-19 deaths have not been recorded by the Delhi government over the last 24 days.

The report states that between April 18 and May 11, the government death toll statistics doesn’t quite tally with funerals performed.

While the municipal records suggest 12,833 deaths of Covid-19 patients in this 24-day period, the Delhi government recorded only 8,050 Covid deaths during the same period.

It has led to BJP-led civic body allege that the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government is deliberately hiding the actual Covid deaths.

“The government has been hiding (death) figures since the pandemic started. Not only did they ignore our request for help in procuring firewood for cremations so citizens do not face inconvenience, they are sitting on funds meant to pay salaries of doctors and sanitation workers engaged everywhere from our Covid hospitals to funeral venues,” as per North MCD mayor Jai Prakash, according to the report.

The same report quotes a Delhi government official thus: “We are completely transparent in all matters and especially the pandemic, all deaths are accounted for. In many instances, patients also die due to comorbidities aggravated by COVID after testing negative either at a hospital or at home.”
