FIR against 15 Muslim girl students for defying Section 144 in Karnataka

Tumakuru police in Karnataka have filed FIR against 15 Muslim girl students for protesting outside a pre-university college demanding they be allowed to wear Hijab in the classes.

According to the college principal, who is also the complainant in the case, the protesting students gathered outside Empress College and disturbed the law and order situation despite Section 144 in place.

On Wednesday, dozens of Muslim girl students of Government Empress Junior PU college staged a demonstration and raised slogans after they were barred from entering in the classrooms with hijab and headscarves.

Reports said the police deployed outside the college reportedly tried to convince students not to protest as prohibitory orders were in place. But when the students defied orders, the college principal filed an FIR against the protesting students.

Several districts of Karnataka have witnessed widespread protests by the Muslim girl students protesting the banning of hijab and headscarves in educational institutions.

Students have demanded they be allowed to wear hijab in classrooms as that is part of their fundamental rights.

Earlier, the Karnataka High Court banned Muslim students from wearing hijab or religious attire to colleges until it passes a final decision.

Colleges across various parts of Karnataka including Gadag, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Udupi witnessed protests in favor and against hijab.

Meanwhile, Karnataka High Court is seized of the matter and conducting daily hearings in the case.
