Harsimrat’s resignation is nothing but a ‘gimmick’: Capt Amarinder Singh

Harsimrat Kaur Badal has resigned from the Modi cabinet on the farmers’ bills but the Punjab chief minister and her rival Capt. Amarinder Singh feels its “too little, too late” and a “gimmick.”

Capt. Amarinder Singh has based his reasoning on the fact that the Shrimoni Akali Dal (SAD) to which harsimrat Badal belongs, has not parted company with their allies, the Bharatiya Janata Party which has introduced the farm sector bills.

“Harsimrat Kaur’s decision to quit Union Cabinet is another in the long chain of theatrics being enacted by @Akali_Dal which has still not quit ruling coalition. It’s motivated not by any concern for farmers but to save their own dwindling political fortunes. Too little too late,” Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted.

But they (the Akalis) will not succeed in misleading the farmer organisations,” he said.

Sukhbir Badal, husband of Harsimrat and chief of the Akali Dal, has said his party would provide “outside” support to the government.

Harsmirat Badal, who was the Union food processing minister in the Modi cabinet, yesterday quit her post just before the voting in bills began in the Lok Sabha. In a tweet, she had said: “Proud to stand with farmers as their daughter and sister.”

Harsimrat Kaur’s resignation from the Union Cabinet has come too late to be of any help to Punjab and its farmers, the Chief Minister said.

Capt. Amarinder Singh claimed had the Akalis taken a tougher stand, the Centre would’ve thought twice before introducing the ordinances and pushing the bills in the parliament.

The farmers of Punjab have been holding huge protests across the state. They want the bills to be withdrawn.

The BJP claims the bills are part of the agri-sector reforms and will help farmers get better market and price for their produce.

The government introduced the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Fcilitation) Bill; the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill in Parliament on Monday to replace ordinances promulgated earlier. The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
