Hindu temples to be freed from govt. control in Karnataka: Bommai

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has announced plans to free Hindu temples and religious institutions from the government laws and rules that control them at present.

Speaking at the two-day state BJP executive committee meeting in Hubli on Wednesday, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, “Currently, Hindu temples in the state are under different types of control bylaws and rules. Temples that have suffered at the hands of bureaucrats will be freed by our government. We will bring a law which will give rights to the temple management to look after their own development.”

Bommai informed that a law will be introduced to release temples from the administrative control of the government before the budget session, which is expected to be held in February.

Through this move, the state government seeks to effectively allow every temple to form its own trust and use its revenue to manage its affair and for development.

Through the Hindu religious endowment department, there are 34,558 temples in the state under come under government regulation, giving the government a total of Rs 650 crore earnings annually. 

The Chief Minister also stated that once the anti-conversion bill becomes law, the government will form a special task force to implement it.

“By ensuring that the anti-conversion bill becomes an Act in the days to come, I will also constitute a special task force for its implementation,” he said.
