I can’t understand Kohli’s captaincy, slams Gambhir after ODI series loss

Former Indian opener and now a MP, Gautam Gambhir has lashed out at the captaincy of Virat Kohli after India lost the one-day series to Australia on Sunday.

“I can’t understand the captaincy to be honest. We kept talking about how important is to take wickets upfront if we have to stop this kind of batting line-up and then you make your premier bowler bowl two overs. Normally, in a One Day game probably there are three spells of 4-3-3 overs. Or probably the maximum is four overs.

“But if you stop your premier fast bowler just by bowling two overs upfront with the news, I can’t understand that kind of captaincy. I probably can’t even explain that captaincy. It is not T20 cricket. I probably can’t understand the reason to be honest because that was poor captaincy.”

Gambhir was referring to a mere two overs which were given to Jasprit Bumrah in his first spell.

India lost the second ODI by 51 runs, having lost the first by 66 runs.

Batting first Australia made 389 for 3 with Steve Smith cracking his second straight century. India replied with 338 for 9, Virat Kohli top scoring with 89 and KL Rahul following up with 76.

Kohli, during his innings, became the fastest to 22,000 international runs.
