India helps Canada with vaccine; Trudeau praises Modi’s leadership

India might hold grievances against Canada for sheltering and promoting Khalistani elements on its soil but Modi’s India is generous enough to help it out with the covid-19 vaccine in this hour of global emergency.

On Wednesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday spoke to his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau and assured him that India will do its best to facilitate supplies of Covid-19 vaccines sought by Canada.

According to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement, Trudeau informed Prime Minister Modi about Canada’s requirements of COVID-19 vaccines from India.

While thanking his Canadian counterpart, PM Modi said in a tweet “Was happy to receive a call from my friend Justin Trudeau. Assured him that India would do its best to facilitate supplies of COVID vaccines sought by Canada,”

Praising Modi’s leadership and India’s pharmaceutical capacity, Trudeau said that if the world manages to conquer Covid-19, it would be significant because of India’s tremendous pharmaceutical capacity, and Prime Minister Modi’s leadership in sharing this capacity with the rest of the world.

The Canadian government, which has already purchased more doses of the covid 19 vaccines than it actually requires, has been currently facing strong criticism as it struggles to ensure there are enough immunization doses to go around.

India is one of the world’s biggest drugmakers, and an increasing number of countries have already approached it for procuring coronavirus vaccines, Last week, external affairs ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said India had sent 56 lakh doses of coronavirus vaccines under grants assistance to a number of countries while 100 lakh doses were sent under commercial supplies.

The conversation between both the leaders does not mention any discussion on ongoing protests. Bilateral ties between India and Canada suffered in the aftermath of PM Trudeau’s remarks on the ongoing farmers’ agitation. During a Facebook interaction, Trudeau had said, “I would be remiss if I didn’t also start by recognizing the news coming out of India about the protest by farmers. The situation is concerning and we’re all very worried about family and friends.”
