Indian roads would match the ones of US by 2024-end, says Gadkari

Indian roads will match the standards of American roads by the end of 2024, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said at ET Global Business Summit on Saturday.

The minister also compared the current logistics cost in India, which is in high double digits, with countries like China and the US, where it is at comparatively lower levels.

Talking about Modi government’s push to infrastructure sector, Gadkari said, “Building a world-class infrastructure is a challenge as well as a mission set by our Prime Minister. Creation of infrastructure of international standard is one of the important tasks.”

By the end of 2024, I am confident that our road infrastructure will be equal to the road infrastructure of the US and that is the target in our mind.”

“Presently, the most important thing related to the economic activity is that our logistics cost is 16 percent. In China, the logistics cost is 8-10 percent. In the European countries and the US, it is 12 percent. So our target is to take this logistics cost to single digit, i.e. 9 percent. That is the reason we are making big highways so that we can save fuel as well as time, thus reducing the cost.”

Invoking former US President John F Kennedy who said that American roads are not good because America is rich, rather America is rich because its roads are good, Gadkari said the his ministry is moving ahead with a similar motto and mission to make Indian roads world-class.

On budget allocation for road infra, the Union transport minister said that the finance minister has given an outlay of Rs 10 lakh crore for the development of infrastructure. He said his department’s allocation for road is Rs 2.7 lakh crore.

“Our target is development of 2 lakh km of national highway network by 2025. It was 96,000 km when I had taken charge; it is now 1.46 lakh km,” he said.
