Kamal Nath calls BJP woman-minister ‘item’ in rally: BJP complains to EC

Former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Kamal Nath has mocked BJP leader and state cabinet minister Imarti Devi, referring to her as an ‘item’ while addressing a rally in Dabra.

“Wo kya hai… main uska naam kyun lun… aapko mujhe starak karna chahiye tha kya item hai… (Who is she… what’s her name? You all should have warned me… what an item!),” Kamal Nath says as the crowd calls out Imarti Devi’s name.’

Reacting to the distasteful statement, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj S Chouhan said, “I’ll observe ‘silent protest’ tomorrow for two hours from 10 am to 12 noon, against former Madhya Pradesh CM and Congress leader Kamal Nath’s remarks wherein he referred to BJP leader Imarti Devi as “item”. He should be ashamed of his statement.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lodged a complaint against Nath with the Election Commission for comments made in bad taste against state Cabinet Minister Imarti Devi.

Imarti Devi filed her nomination from Dabra on Thursday for the upcoming by-election to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly.

Imarti Devi had alleged that Kamal Nath used to pay Rs 5 lakhs to MLA who couldn’t be drafted in into the state cabinet and needed to be kept in good humour.

Kamal Nath replied with an allegation of his own: “She talks in crores and is now saying I was offering money to MLAs,” Nath had said.
