Kim Kardashian, and a whole lot of other celebrities, would not be posting on Instagram of Facebook for next 24 hours, starting Wednesday.
They are doing so to protest against world’s biggest social media firm to fight hate and discrimination.
Other stars include Leonardo DiCaprio, Sacha Baron Cohen, Katy Perry and Michael B. Jordan among others.
They are doing so in support of the freeze organized by “Stop Hate for Profit”, a group calling on Facebook, which owns Instagram, to change its course.
“I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation—created by groups to sow division and split America apart,” posted Kardashian. She has 188 million followers on Instagram.
Facebook is reeling under pressure from the governments and activists that advertise on its platforms for tougher actions on those who promote discrimination, hatred and violence.
The Stop Hate for Profit includes the Anti-Defamation League and the NAACP and are pushing for advertisers to boycott the platform.
By July nearly 1,000 advertisers had joined, including VW and Adidas. Facebook still reported a $5.2 billion quarterly profit at the end of July, despite the protest.
Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook, had met the coalition organizers in July but little has helped in softening the stance of coalition organizers.
The collective, made up of nine associations, are demanding the Facebook increase its resources to fight online hatred and disinformation.
