Kumbh Mela could close today as Covid-19 gathers steam

After hundreds of devotees at the site of the world’s biggest religious festival, Kumbh, tested positive for covid-19, there are reports rounding up that Kumbh mela can close today, two weeks early.

Sources revealed that the decision was taken after discussions between the Uttarakhand government and religious leaders.

Thousands of people have been gathering at the annual event on the banks of the river Ganga and it has increased the covid cases in the state. The virus was detected in more than 1,000 people in just 48 hours in the city of Haridwar.

On Monday, the day of the auspicious Shahi Snan (ritualistic bath), nearly a lakh had gathered for the holy dip in absolute violation of Covid protocols issued by the Union Health Ministry.

This morning also throwing caution to the wind thousands were congregated at Har ki Pauri in Haridwar to take a dip in the Ganga during the third shahi snan of the Kumbh Mela.

Police officer Sanjay Gunjyal also told Reuters that it is becoming difficult to fine people for not following guidelines. “People are being fined for not following social distancing in non-crowded ghats, but it is very hard to fine people in the main ghats, which are very crowded.”

The Kumbh Mela has already been cut short to two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Otherwise in normal circumstances, the mela continues for nearly four months.

Uttarakhand recorded its highest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases on Tuesday with 1,925 people testing positive.
