Law and order situation in Bengal is very alarming: Governor

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar is extremely alarmed over the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal and slammed the Mamata Banerjee government today.

The Governor also summoned Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi to brief him on the law and order situation tomorrow and indicate all steps taken to contain post-poll violence.

Dhankhar, in a series of tweets, said that is rampant post-poll retributive violence in Bengal and alleged that ostracization of people who backed the BJP in assembly polls had graduated to social boycott and denial of benefits they are otherwise entitled.

They are made to suffer extortion fee for living in their own house or run their own business, he said.

He further said it is “most unfortunate” that state functionaries like the chief minister are not even recognising this malaise much less take steps to contain it.

Tagging West Bengal Police, the Governor said that police “unfortunately engaged as an extension of ruling dispensation to let loose vindictiveness on political opponents.”

On Saturday, the Governor slammed the state government saying that the unabated incidents will “put humanity to shame”.

Reports of violence have been reported in several parts of West Bengal ever since the results of the assembly elections were declared on May 2.

While the BJP has claimed that nine of its party workers were killed in the post-poll violence, the TMC has categorically denied the allegations with CM calling it “fake news”.

Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court has formed a three-member Committee for rehabilitation of victims of post-poll violence.

On May 7, a four-member team deputed by the Ministry of Home Affairs visited the Diamond Harbour area of South 24 Parganas district to assess the ground situation.
