Maharashtra DGP unhappy with reshuffles in police ranks; steps down from office

Maharashtra Police has recently witnessed a major reshuffle as almost 50 senior officials being transferred and the Director-General of Police (DGP) in Maharashtra, Subodh Jaiswal seems to be unhappy with this decision of the Thackeray government.

DGP Jaiswal’s felt that his opinions were not taken into consideration by the Maharashtra government while reshuffling which has created a tiff in the relations with the DGP and State government.

He was not comfortable with Maharashtra’s CM Uddhav Thackeray and Home Minister Anil Deshmukh over postings and transfers of IPS officers, as per a media report.

Following this, Jaiswal has decided to leave state police and take up a central deputation. After the Thackeray led government took over in November last year, Jaiswal was at loggerheads with the new administration.

A senior police officer told that the DGP was of the view that there should be a fixed policy regarding the transfers and postings, whereas the political leadership had a different view and asserted that DGP should not interfere in police transfers.

Jaiswal also wrote to the state home department that instead of revamping the police force, only officers who have completed two years should be shunted out. He said postings in Naxal-infested areas should be mandatory. 22 IPS officers have never worked in Naxal-infested areas.

Unwilling to work further, Jaiswal asked for NOC from the state government for central deputation and it was immediately granted by CM Thackeray. Jaiswal is all set to join National Security Guards as DG.

He earlier served intelligence agency RAW for a prolonged period. He returned to the state as Mumbai police chief on July 1, 2018, and was promoted a year later as DGP in place of Datta Padsalgikar. He will retire on September 30, 2022.

Last month, the Commissioner of Mumbai Police Param Bir Singh restored former encounter specialist API Sachin Vaze. He was suspended 16 years ago for a custodial death.

Param Bir Singh re-inducted Vaze in Mumbai police in June this year, 4 months after taking up the post of Commissioner of Police in the month of February. Vaze has been entrusted with the ongoing investigation on Republic TV.
