Param Bir Singh no longer commissioner of Mumbai Police

Param Bir Singh is no longer the commissioner of Mumbai Police. He was replaced by Hemant Nagrale and transferred to Home Guards in a massive announcement by the Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh today.

Readers would recall in these columns the suspicion that controversial cop Sachin Vaze’s arrest by the NIA could just be the tip of the iceberg. Whether Param Bir Singh is that tip or more heads would roll remain to be seen.

Sachin Vaze was arrested in connection with an explosives-filled SUV found abandoned near Mukesh Ambani’s multistorey home Antilia in Mumbai.

The investigation has become a huge embarrassment for the Maharashtra government, with the opposition BJP accusing Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray of shielding Sachin Vaze, a controversial cop who was once a member of his Shiv Sena.

The case involves a Scorpio SUV carrying gelatin sticks found abandoned on Mumbai’s Carmichael Road, near Mukesh Ambani’s Antilia, on February 25. It carried a threat letter to Mukesh and Nita Ambani. Sachin Vaze was the first investigating officer in the case but is now suspected to have planned the incident.
