R-Day: Tableau to depict India’s navy revolt of 1946

This Republic Day, the Indian Navy’s tableau will depict the Royal Indian Navy (RIN) Mutiny of 1946 to commemorate the historic event in Indian freedom struggle which rarely finds mention in the public discourse, by media or in academics.

In February 1946, Indian sailors went on a slow-down strike protest against their living conditions and food, and with a nationalistic uproar, stopped obeying the demands of their British officers. The mutiny left colonial masters Britain with no choice but to leave India.

Lieutenant Mayank Bhagour said the forward part of the tableau depicts “the naval uprising of 1946, an event which contributed to India’s struggle for independence and will be led by Lieutenant Commander Aanchal Sharma, who is an observer officer posted at the Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 314.”

The tableau will also show the navy’s theme of ‘Combat Ready, Credible and Cohesive’.

Apart from the tableau, a naval contingent of 96 men, three platoon commanders led by Lieutenant Commander Aanchal Sharma, an observer officer posted at the Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 314 will be part of the Republic Day celebrations.
