Sarma urges no beef in Hindu areas ‘out of sensitivity’ in Assam

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured that their government will take all necessary steps within the ambit of the constitution to protect cows in the state. Stressing that cow slaughter must be stopped, Sarma said that people should not consume beef where the cow is worshipped.

“We believe that cows are our mother and people worship them. So, we will want cows not to come from West Bengal. We will want that at places where cows are worshipped, it is not consumed there. I am not asking anyone to change their food habit but many times I have seen the statement from Darul Uloom in Lucknow, asking the Muslim people not to consume beef in Hindu areas.”

He said that he doesn’t want people to change their habits all of a sudden, but in sensitive areas, people can give up eating beef.

“There is no need to have Hotel Madina in Fancy Bazar or Santipur or Gandhibasti (all in Guwahati) because people have sensitivity. Where there is no sensitivity, all personal habits will continue,” he added.

Citing the Constitution, Sarma added, Article 48 of the Indian Constitution clearly says that killing an animal involved with agriculture is a crime.

“The Constitution of India in the directive principles says the killing of cow should not be done and we will continue to appeal. When in the house the day an AIUDF MLA supports this, it will start the beginning of a new Assam.”

Earlier, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi informed the Assembly that the government was planning to introduce a new bill for cow protection in the next session.

“We will adopt a zero-tolerance policy and enforce stringent punishment for offenders. We all revere and worship cows. It is considered a sacred animal as it nurtures us through milk. It is a symbol of the divine bounty of the earth. I am happy to inform you that my government plans to introduce the Cow Protection Bill in the next Assembly session,” Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi said.
