Shaheen Bagh demolition drive called off as units blocked

After Jahangirpuri, an anti-encroachment drive that was slated to begin at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh was called off after local residents and politicians blocked the JCBs sent by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). 

Visuals from the area showed locals sitting on roads and stopping bulldozers that were sent for the anti-encroachment drive in the Shaheen Bagh area. 

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress joined the protestors opposing the reported order of a demolition drive in the Shaheen Bagh area of Delhi.

“There is no encroachment here. We are here to make sure injustice is not done to anyone,” said AAP’s Majid Khan who slammed the municipal authorities for the action. Addressing a press conference, Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta said that the Congress and Aam aadmi Party (AAP) were giving a ‘communal angle’ to the demolition drive in Shaheen Bagh. Addressing a press conference after the demolition drive was called off, BJP alleged that the Congress and AAP were ‘protecting’ the Bangladeshi Rohingyas in the area and claimed that people who are ‘shielding’ these Rohingyas, will be shown their place in elections.

High drama unveiled at Shaheen Bagh when JCBs sent by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) reached Shaheen Bagh area of Delhi. Residents, politicians and locals blocked the bulldozers sent by the civic authorities after which the bulldozers reportedly went back.

Visuals showed SDMC officials removing illegal structures from the Shaheen Bagh area of Delhi. According to official inputs, the shops and buildings in the area has covered service lane adjoining the road. AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan stood as ‘shield’ to stop the encroachment drive.

 SDMC Central Zone Chairman Rajpal Singh said that the authorities are not targeting minorities only. “The area is being evacuated to ensure no one is injured,” Singh said.

– Amanatullah Khan, AAP MLA said that people have already removed encroachments on his request. “Wazu khana and toilets outside a mosque here were removed in presence of police, earlier. When there are no encroachments, why have they come here? Just to do politics?” he told times Now.

According to latest reports, a scuffle broke out between the police personnel and local residents as the opposed to anti-encroachment drive in the area.
