Sidhu resigns as Punjab Congress chief: Is he unhappy with Channi’s cabinet?

In a surprise development, Navjot Singh Sidhu has resigned as the president of Punjab Congress though he continues to be in the party.

Navjot Singh Sidhu took to Twitter to make the announcement. He posted the letter he had written to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

The letter read, “The collapse of a man’s character stems from the compromise corner, I can never compromise on Punjab’s future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab. Therefore, I hereby resign as the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Will continue to serve the Congress.”

Navjot SIngh Sidhu’s resignation is only the latest update in a series of dramatic developments in Punjab over the last few weeks.

In what seemed to be the pinnacle of the infighting between Navjot Singh Sidhu and former CM Captain Amarinder Singh, the latter was replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi as chief minister of Punjab on September 20. On Sunday, Channi brought in his cabinet which was preceded by marathon meetings with the party high command and includes six ministers who were also in the cabinet of Capt Amarinder Singh.

Six Congress MLAs from Doaba and one former Punjab Congress committee president demanded that Sidhu remove Rana Gurjeet Singh from the proposed cabinet list due to his involvement in the “mining scandal” and instead “ include a clean Dalit face in view of upcoming polls.”

However, Ranja Gurjeet Singh was sworn in as a minister on Sunday despite these complaints.

Interestingly, Sidhu’s resignation comes on the same day that former CM Capt Amarinder Singh is to meet the Union home minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda, as per sources.
