Sitalkuchi tragedy: Officer narrates bid to capture polling booth on that fateful day

The tragedy of Sitalkuchi, where four people were shot dead by the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), during the fourth phase of the polling on April 10, has resulted in a political slugfest between Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party.

While BJP says that it was because of the provocation in her speeches by state’s chief minister Mamata Banerjee which prompted goons to attack police personnel, Trinamool Congress has added to the fire by terming it genocide following which the Election Commission put a day’s ban on Banerjee which ended last evening.

Now a sensational statement has come from Dilip Kumar Majumdar, the third polling officer at Sitalkuchi booth no. 126, the scene of the tragic event.

Majumdar, with his bandaged hand telling a tale of the day, told in an interview to a local channel that they were beaten by a goons who had rushed inside the polling booth around 10 a.m.

As per Majumdar, the police personnel tried to stop a section of people who were on their bikes approaching the polling booth.

Meanwhile, the polling booth was locked from outside and whoever had entered the booth, started throwing the ballot boxes and EVM machines. The obvious conclusion was the goons were trying to capture the booth, said Majumdar.

That’s what prompted firing and as per Majumdar, he has never faced such a nightmare in his life.
