Twitter responds to Centre’s ask by labelling 5 more as ‘manipulated media’





The Central government yesterday asked the social media giant Twitter to remove the “manipulated media” tag, made it clear in a strong worded message that the social media platform cannot pass judgment when the issue is under investigation

However, despite that today Twitter extended that label to five other Bharatiya Janata Party leaders. The leaders include Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, BJP national social media in-charge Priti Gandhi, Andhra Pradesh co-incharge Sunil Deodhar, BJP media panelist Charu Pragya, BJP Delhi general secretary Kuljeet Singh Chahal. 

Apart from them, a prominent twitterati Shefali Vaidya’s tweet was also flagged. 

Yesterday, The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has sent a notice to microblogging platform Twitter, for affixing the manipulated media tag to “tweets made by Indian political leaders with reference to a toolkit created to undermine, derail and demean the efforts of the Government against the Covid-19 pandemic”.

“Twitter has unilaterally drawn a conclusion in this matter and arbitrarily tagged it as ‘Manipulated Media’. Such tagging by Twitter appears pre-judged, prejudiced and a deliberate attempt to colour the investigation by local law enforcement agency,” the ministry said.
