UP exceed 60% voting; Good turnout in Goa, Uttarakhand too

Voting in all Assembly seats in Goa and Uttarakhand and 55 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, where the second phase of the state elections is being held was concluded today at 6:00 pm. 

The polls will decide the fate of several prominent leaders, including Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and jailed Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan.

According to data from the Election Commission at 5 pm, Goa recorded 75.29% voter turnout while Uttarakhand stood at 59.37%. Uttar Pradesh witnessed 60.44% voting in the second phase of Assembly elections till 5 pm.

A total of 301 candidates were in the fray from 40 Assembly seats in the coastal state of Goa (which has over 11 lakh voters), while in Uttarakhand, which has an electorate of 81 lakh, 632 candidates, including 152 independents, contested from 70 seats. The two states are witnessing a multi-cornered contest this time with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) trying to test waters outside of its home turf Delhi. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and other smaller parties are also trying to make inroads in Goa.

In the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, as many as 586 candidates were in the fray from 55 seats in this phase.
