UP Polls: Yogi for Ayodhya; BJP finalises 172 candidates

A 24-member panel of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met to finalise the poll strategy for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. The panel decided candidates to be fielded on 172 seats in the state including the constituencies of chief minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

According to a report, CM Yogi Adityanath will be contesting the upcoming assembly election from Ayodhya and Maurya is scheduled to lead the fight from the Sirathu constituency.

While Ayodhya seat is currently represented by BJP’s Ved Prakash Gupta in the assembly, the Ram Mandir construction and Yogi’s frequent visits to Ram Lalla could work strongly in favour of Yogi Adityanath.

It may be noted that Adityanath, who represented the Gorakhpur constituency in the Lok Sabha five times, has never contested Assembly elections and is currently a member of the Legislative Council.

Meanwhile, BJP is expected to announce its first list of candidates for the Uttar Pradesh elections on Makar Sankranti (January 14).

Voting for the 403-members assembly will be held in seven phases. The first phase of the voting will begin on February 10. Further rounds of voting will take place on February 14, 20, 23, 27 and March 3 and 7. The results will be declared on March 10.
