UP’s bid to control population is attack on Muslims, says Samajwadi Party’s MLA

The Uttar Pradesh government is considering enacting a law to curb population growth. On this, Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Iqbal Mehmood made a controversial remark and blamed Dalit and tribals for population growth in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Alleging that a conspiracy to attack Muslims under the guise of law, he said, “Actually it is an attack on Muslims in the guise of population. If the people of BJP understand that only the number of Muslims is increasing in the country, then this law should have come in the Parliament so that it would be applicable in the whole country. Why is it being brought in Uttar Pradesh only? Muslims have now understood that there should not be more than two-three children.”

“The impact of NRC in Assam was more on non-Muslims than on Muslims. The population law will also have the same fate. I fail to understand why the Yogi Adityanath government, which has barely seven months left in the office, is talking of a population control law?” the SP MLA added further.

Another Samajwadi Party MP, Shafiqur Rahman Barq, also called the proposed law to control the population a conspiracy against Muslims.

It is worth mentioning that the Uttar Pradesh Law Commission is examining the feasibility of having a state enactment for population control.

According to the chairman of the commission, Justice (Retd) Aditya Nath Mittal, the commission has started work on the proposal of the law to curb the population growth of the state and hoped to submit his panel’s report on the issue to the government in around two months.
