Why Virat Kohli should continue as RCB captain, questions Gambhir

After the loss of Royal Challengers Bangalore in an Eliminator against Sun Risers Hyderabad on Friday, Gautam Gambhir has said that RCB should have a new captain. RCB captain Virat Kohli has failed to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) even once in last eight years, he pointed out.

Gambhir said Kohli should own up responsibility for failure of the team and put his hands up. He asked which team would have persisted with a captain if he failed to win the trophy even once in eight years?

“It has to be accountability. A captain needs to take accountability,” he said. “It is not only about one year, it is not only about this.”

RCB’s batting unit had posted a dismal score of 131/7 in 20 overs, playing first. Kohli had opened the batting with Devdutt Padikkal but neither clicked with the bat. Except for AB de Villiers, and Aaron Finch, no other RCB batsman remained on the pitch for long.

RCB’s Moeen Ali was run out by a direct throw from Khan after he had taken strike on a ball which was a “free hit”. This was a most unusual fashion to get out, and it is not clear if any other batsman has fallen in this manner in IPL.

In IPL 2020, RCB made an exit from the tournament after five consecutive losses. Somehow, the team, which has some big names in all departments, has failed to come up to expectations of spectators.
